Archeological sites of Korcula island

The traces of prehistoric life can be found on different locations of the island. The stone knifes dating from neolithic on the island of Badija are one of the oldest findings. This knifes were found near the city of Korčula.

There is also one of the richest Mediterranean and most eminent archaeological cave area - Big Cave in Vela Luka. The researches have published several articles about Big Cave in Sunday Mirror and New York Times. Big Cave lies on Pinski Rat hill which is located above Kale cove.

You can reach Big Cave by car but there is also a nice path that leads directly to the cave. If you decide to visit Big Cave by walk make sure to bring with some water and a hat. There are two more archaeological sites apart from the Big Cave such as Jakas Cave (near Zrnovo) and Zukovica Cave (near Račišće).

 

Big Cave - Vela Spila

This cave is distinguished by enormous number of archaeological findings, significance and its diversity. This site have a lot of arhaeological finds that prove that several prehistoric communities used the cave and lived here in their every day life.

They also used the cave for burying their dead. On this locality the excavations are still in progress. Its amazing that the findings date even back to the ice age. 17. 500 years old ceramic specimens inside the Big Cave have been found recently by archaeologists.

Dinko Radić is one of the leading reasearches who is guiding other archaeologists from all over the world around the Big Cave. The Big Cave is more and more popular by visits from many archaeologists from all over the world. The work of researches from the University of Cambridge who are included in researches on Vela Luka has been financially supporting by The Queen Elisabeth II.

Historical lapidary document - Psephism of Lumbarda

3rd century B.C, is the date that Psephism of Lumbarda originates. It is a true evidence that Greek settlement was on this area. The truth about if by any chanse, this psephism was never found or lost will never be discovered. Psephism is historical lapidary document. It is one of the rare testimonies and documents that are well preserved and a true foundation of a city in the antic world. Psephism is kept in Zagreb in their Archaeological Museum.

The statue of the city and the island of Korčula
This statue is the second oldest example of legislation among Slavs and dates from 13th century. Medieval Latin is visable on the oldest part of The Statue and it was printed in 1643 in Venice. One of the old handwritten copies is preserved and kept in Rome and the other is in Korcula in a private collection of Kapor family.
