Korcula old town

The city of Korcula origins from 13th century. In the town of Korcula was born one of the greatest explorers of all times Marco Polo. If we can just imagine how it was like to visit the Old Town of Korcula during its splendid Venetian times we can just walk up the staircase from the 19th century.

Walking through the 14th century Revelin Tower and the stairase that used to be a drawbridge really gives you chills over the spine. This amazing entrance emblazoned with local Korculan governors, coat of arms of the Venetian doge, the entrance is really a stunning area made in the 15th century from stone walls which surround the whole city. That kind of style of building was not only typical for Korcula's town but it also showed how well off were the people who lived in this beautiful town.

Walk through the streets of Korcula old town

When you start walking on the streets of main Korcula's town the streets start to get a little steep on the western side.

During the hot summer this helps to bring the refreshing sea breezes into the center of a town. The allies on the right side are more curved to take the cool breeze out of the chilly northeast winds.

Town is designed on its compactoval shaped peninsula in a very unique form. You would found there a variety of churches, private and public buildings and museums.

The beautiy of variety of stone carvings is seen in those buildings and the masonry is also amazing. Inside of a 16th century Loggia you will find a tourist board. This Loggia used to be a place of gatherings and other public meetings.

Pjaceta also called as the Old Town's or main square where you will find the 15th Century chruch of St. Marks.

Church was built by Italian master from Korcula limestone. Oppostie St. Mark's chatedral you'll find Town Museum or The Gradski muzej. Of course we can't forget Marco Polo's House, Kuca Marka Pola.

Korcula is very proud to claim that there Korcula was a birthplace of this famous explorer. Korcula is a unique medieval town which is surrounded by the sea, amazing history, architecture, art galleries, shops and cafes.

 

 

 

Korcula harbour

Korcula's harbour is sittuated on the northeastern coast of the island of Korcula. Western and eastern part divide the harbour.

After rounding the lighthouse and the whole peninsula the marina comes finally in sight. In summer time its not recommendable to stay in the western side of the Korcula's town harbour because the storms can be too strong and dangerous.
