Stroll through narrow streets of Korcula town

If you visit the old town of Korcula do not forget to visit the street and house where Marco Polo was born. Town of Korcula is traditionally one of the best tourist and cultural centres in the Mediterranean.

It is also a well preserved medieval town. Korcula town has around 3.400 people. Suburbs are in front of city walls and the new parts were built on the coast.

On a small peninsula you can see the old town area. Northeastern end seems to be a perfect place for this picturesque town.

 

 

Towers and walls of Korcula town

The main street spreads through the middle of the town in the old area of the city. This main street separates the western and eastern part of city.

Sea breeze always comes through the town because of the position of the streets, the whole structure reminds on a fishbone. During the winter there are cold winds from the northeast and you dont feel them so roughly because of the smart street structure.

High towers and walls were surrounding the town of Korcula both from the sea side and the land, the town raised from 13th to 15th centuries. People managed to preserved some parts of the south eight towers and defence wall.

Town of Korcula is known for sword dance also known as 'Moreska' in which a black and white king Moro and Osman fight for a girl's attention. You can see this performances of Moreska every year from month of May till mid of October.

Marco Polo was born in Korcula town, this famous Venetian trader who traveled all the way to China. You can also visit Marco Pol0's house in the old town centre. There are many galleries, churcches and museums taht you can visit.

On 30th of June there is a carnival festivity called Half of New Year, you can put a mask on and enjoy in a party until dawn with great food and live music. Korcula has one of the oldest cypress alleys, it has more then 102 if you want to get to the top of the hill. There is a small and beautiful St. Anton's church. Another great sight is the exhibition of Marco Polo right in the middle of the centre of Korcula town.

Medieval Towers of Korcula town

All around Korcula town there are thick stone towers and walls from the 14th century, they used this walls to protect themselves from the passing enemies.

Tower Barbarigo was built in 1488 and is located on the north end of the old town. Tower Cappelo built in 1493 and tower Balbi built in 1483 are located on the south side of Korcula old town. In the middle ages those two tower were part of all 12 towers by wich the town was surrounded with.
